ABOUT THE PROJECT
For my final project at Istituto Europeo di Design, I developed a complete rebranding concept for MNAC - Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya - exploring how its visual identity could better reflect the strength of its architecture, the richness of its collection, and its cultural presence in Barcelona. The project started from a contrast I noticed while experiencing the museum and the city around it. MNAC occupies an incredibly iconic and imposing building, recognizable from many parts of Barcelona and widely used as a meeting point and viewpoint. Yet its visual identity felt much quieter than the physical presence of the museum itself, with limited elements to create a distinctive and cohesive brand experience. Over two weeks, I worked from research and strategy to the final visual system. Visiting the museum became an essential part of the process, allowing me to find references within the space rather than imposing a completely external visual language. Its three main collections: Romanesque, Gothic, and Modern Art became the foundation for a set of icons inspired by recurring architectural and artistic details, from Romanesque arches and Gothic ornamentation to stained glass and Barcelona’s Modernisme. Alongside the visual exploration, I developed the strategic foundations of the brand, considering the role MNAC plays in the city and how its identity could make the museum and its collection feel more recognizable, relevant, and alive. The final system brings together typography, color, iconography, graphic language, and applications in a contemporary yet sophisticated identity, designed to feel connected to MNAC’s heritage without losing the institutional character and cultural weight that make the museum unique.
